Infamous Celebrity Prenuptial Agreements

Updated: Jan 13

A prenuptial agreement can be an important safety feature of any marriage – celebrity or civilian. Prenups are especially popular, however, among the rich and famous. Celebrities often have more to lose in divorce cases than the average person, including millions of dollars in income and extremely high-value homes. While no couple plans on divorcing when they draw up a prenup, having one can provide peace of mind…or important rules should the marriage end. Some celebrity prenups (or at least, rumored prenups) have become infamous over the years for their ridiculous demands and harsh outcomes for one or both parties.

Here are a few prenup hot takes from celebrity couples:

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

When news of their 2016 split came just two years after their marriage, many people wondered what would happen to the Jolie-Pitt’s large family. The couple shares six kids and a history of 12 years together. According to what the press knows about the divorce, Angelina Jolie filed for full physical custody of all six children.

The IB Times stated an alleged adultery clause in the couple’s prenuptial agreement would grant Angelina primary custody of all six kids should Brad Pitt get too close to another woman during the marriage. The couple’s prenup also states that assets they earned together during their marriage would go to a trust for the kids, split six ways.

Beyoncé and Jay Z

Bey and Jay are lucky in love for now, but should this multimillion-dollar couple ever divorce, their prenuptial agreement would kick in to settle matters. Sources say Jay Z gives Beyoncé $5 million for each child the couple has together based on language in the prenup, whether the couple divorces or not. If Beyoncé and Jay Z ever do go their separate ways, their prenup stipulates Beyoncé would receive $1 million for every year they were married.

Ice-T and Coco Austin

According to intel from the couple’s friends, Ice-T and his wife Coco Austin have one of the most unique Hollywood prenups. The couple has been married since 2002, with no announcements of divorce as of yet. Their prenuptial agreement, however, evidently gives Ice-T the rights to Coco’s breast and buttock implants should they divorce. While the couple has not confirmed this information, Ice-T’s friend Don Magic Juan stated that if they divorced, Ice-T would apparently demand the implants back from Coco.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban

Since on Hollywood’s happiest couples seem to be heading to the courthouse soon, an alleged prenuptial agreement between the two would protect Nicole from any financial liability if Keith were guilty of using illegal drugs or drinking alcohol in excess. Since Keith Urban is a known recovering addict, this clause may make sense for the couple if Nicole fears a relapse could end their marriage. Since Nicole is the higher earner in the couple, the prenup would protect her if Keith were at-fault for the divorce.

Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock

In this infamous prenup case, Chris Rock came out the loser when his prenuptial agreement expired just before his divorce from Malaak Compton-Rock in 2015. Chris’s wife appeared to wait to file for divorce until just after the 20-year-old prenup expired – exposing Chris to a great deal of financial liability as the higher earner in the relationship. Chris Rock, worth about $70 million, may end up paying Malaak half his fortune based on California’s property division laws. Avoid a mistake such as this by hiring a lawyer to handle your prenuptial agreement in your state.

While prenups are traditionally thought of as worst-case-scenario financial planning, relationship agreements aren't always all about the money. Don't be afraid to put it all in writing to refer back to as a living, breathing document. And plan to have meetings about how you are running your marriage and family just as you would for your company or any other project you care about profoundly.

From meticulously detailing procedures in case of infidelity to leaving it up to fate, here's how some celebrity couples handled their pre-nuptial agreements."Two egos in a marriage can be great if all the important issues are agreed upon up front," Handel Group co-president and life coach Laurie Gerber previously told Business Insider.
